Our Story (From Pastor Jose)
This project involves a school that caters for 1100 students drawn from a distance of up to 14 km. Youths from most of the outlying villages ride bikes to school but find that the trip cuts into their study time, particularly with their commitment to the family chores each day. This situation is most relevant to year11 and 12 students.
This need has given birth to the Khmer Youth Development Center (KYDC). Situated on a large area of land behind Som Dach Ov High School, KYDC is a dormitory facility capable of accommodating 40 high schoolers. With the approval of the School board, the District and Provincial office of Education, the local NGO (LLC) running the project is now catering to 23 resident students and preparing to fill the dormitory to its capacity by the opening of the next school year in November this year. Aside from subsidized board and lodging, KYDC is also offering English and computer classes both to resident students and other students from the neighbouring school and communities.
The project is aimed toward helping raise up Cambodian manpower with high level of moral and ethical standards, side by side with competence from acquiring higher education without being dependent on their financially challenged parents as they find ways and means to support themselves through college. This is why KYDC has always been trying to develop local income-generating projects, both as a means to locally sustain the Center’s operation, and especially provide the resident students hands-on avenues to develop life skills and excellent work ethics.
